Fear takes more than one road
Rapid defensive responses and slower conscious appraisal can process a threat on different timescales.
A rustle in the grass can startle the body before the mind identifies wind. Joseph LeDoux traces defensive processing through routes that differ in speed and detail: coarse sensory information can help trigger rapid protective responses, while richer cortical processing supports a slower appraisal. The quick route buys time by accepting false alarms.
Popular diagrams sometimes turn this into two sealed brain highways, or make the amygdala a single “fear centre.” The biology is more distributed, and LeDoux later sharpened the distinction between survival circuits and the conscious feeling of fear. Still, the mechanism explains a familiar lag: a body can begin preparing for danger before a person has decided what the danger is.
