Read the annex as a constrained space
A short idea drawn from The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank.
The Secret Annex can be mapped room by room: shared walls, steep stairs, covered windows and working premises below. Reading the diary with that physical plan in view makes ordinary actions—moving, washing, arguing, keeping quiet—legible as problems of constrained space.
A floor plan cannot recreate fear or grant access to anyone’s interior life. Nor should the hiding place eclipse the wider machinery of Nazi persecution and the people who assisted those inside. It offers a careful observational aid for readers: material limits shaped the daily rhythms the diarist recorded firsthand.
