Remembering can reopen a memory

Retrieval can temporarily make some memories modifiable before they are stored again.

Remembering feels like opening an archive, but some memories behave more like documents checked out for revision. Joseph LeDoux explains reconsolidation research in which reactivating a learned association can make it temporarily labile. During that window, new information or biological interference may alter what is stored again.

The effect is not a general-purpose delete key. Results depend on the kind and age of memory, the reminder, timing, and experimental conditions; translating laboratory fear learning into therapy is difficult. The quieter implication survives: retrieval is an event that can change the trace being retrieved. Confidence and vividness therefore do not certify that a memory has remained untouched since its first recording.
