The machine that turned breath into a trace
A short idea drawn from Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art by James Nestor.
A spirometer measures air moved into or out of the lungs. Nineteenth-century instruments used physical displacement to make breath volume visible; modern devices add flow, timing and digital analysis. The object changed respiration from something heard and felt into a curve that could be compared.
A trace does not interpret itself. Technique, reference populations, equipment and clinical context affect meaning, and normal ranges are not sharp borders between health and disease. The instrument's quiet historical achievement is narrower: an invisible motion became recordable. Breath could leave a line behind without that line becoming the whole person.
