Sleep timing is pulled by two different processes

A short idea drawn from Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker.

One pressure to sleep builds with time awake. Another comes from the circadian system, a roughly daily network coordinated by a central clock that responds strongly to light. The two processes interact, which helps explain why exhaustion and the ability to fall asleep do not always rise in perfect step.

This is a broad physiological model, not an explanation for every restless night. Work schedules, illness, medication, stress, age and sleep disorders can all matter. Its value is conceptual: “tired” is not a single tank running empty. The body is balancing accumulated sleep need with timing signals that organise wake and rest across the day.

A sweeping invitation to take sleep seriously, best read alongside corrections to its disputed claims.

What to keep in view

The two-process model is simplified and cannot identify the cause of an individual's sleep difficulty.
