A monastery garden made inheritance countable
A short idea drawn from The Gene: An Intimate History by Siddhartha Mukherjee.
Beginning in the 1850s, Gregor Mendel crossed pea plants in a monastery garden, tracking sharply distinguishable traits through generations. His careful counts supported the idea that hereditary factors are passed in discrete patterns rather than simply blending away. The work appeared before genes had a physical identity.
Mendelian ratios describe particular single-gene relationships, not heredity in full. Many traits involve numerous genes, environmental influence and patterns beyond simple dominance. That later complexity does not shrink the garden's achievement. Mendel made inheritance experimentally countable, giving future biology a pattern to connect to chromosomes and DNA.
