Two minutes can change the default

Small changes in friction can alter whether a desired or undesired routine becomes the path of least resistance.

A guitar in its case asks for several decisions; a guitar on a stand asks for one. James Clear treats friction as behaviour’s quiet architecture. Reduce the steps before a wanted action, and add steps before an unwanted one: prepare the clothes, pre-open the document, move the charger out of the bedroom.

The “two-minute rule” is not a biological threshold and easy beginnings do not guarantee difficult finishes. Structural barriers cannot be tidied away by personal optimisation. The bounded mechanism is choice design: when motivation fluctuates, the number and timing of small obstacles help decide which intention survives contact with the moment. Environment cannot supply a reason, but it can stop charging that reason a toll every time.

A clear synthesis of cue design, repetition, and identity without requiring dramatic reinvention.

What to keep in view

Friction is one influence among ability, resources, motivation, and social constraints; two minutes is a heuristic, not a measured threshold.
