Distance stops being the point.
The road in
Cold-war packet-switching begat ARPANET; academic e-mail begat the internet; and in 1989-93 a CERN physicist gave the web away — address, protocol, page — free to everyone.
The plumbing was Cold War, the gift was Swiss: packet-switching built to survive failure, campus e-mail becoming the internet's habit-forming application, and at CERN a physicist solving a filing problem with three standards small enough to memorise — then persuading the laboratory to give them away outright. The web's founding transaction was a renunciation.
Life inside it
Mosaic and Netscape turned protocol into place; modems sang in bedrooms from Seattle to Seoul; every publisher, shop and government rebuilt itself a homepage. Attention, not information, became the scarce good.

By spring I had built a page of my own — grey background, a photograph of the harbour scanned in the physics office, a list of links titled some things I have found. A stranger in Finland wrote to thank me for one of the links. I printed his mail and kept it in my wallet like currency, because that is what it was: proof that distance had stopped charging admission, and the first stranger's voice in what would become the crowd.
The librarians came to the lab in a delegation, wanting to see it. I showed them a journal in Australia, a preprint server, a page where a man in Illinois was cataloguing every browser in existence — there were eleven. The head librarian was quiet, then said: we have spent two thousand years learning what to keep. You had better start learning it too, quickly. I bookmarked her sentence as well. It has aged better than the browsers.
I log off later each night. The kettle-song of the modem has become the sound my decade makes, and one more page is never one more page — it is a door with further doors inside. The physicist gave it away, they say, wanting knowledge shared like weather. On the good nights I believe we will be worthy of the gift. On the late nights I notice the counting: hits, links, visitors. Somewhere in the counting, I suspect, the weather changes.

Berners-Lee's own account keeps the founding bargain visible: the web was donated — protocol, address, page, all public domain — on the argument that a commons would out-compound any toll road. The feeds and platforms that later enclosed attention are one reading of what followed; the open protocols still running beneath them are the other. Both inheritances are live, and the will is still in probate.

Where accounts differ
The credible challenge. The open web promised decentralised knowledge, while critics note that search, hosting and attention tend towards concentration even when the underlying protocols remain public.
Taking it together. Open standards lowered the cost of publishing and connection. That success created abundance whose discovery and financing later empowered new intermediaries rather than ending gatekeeping.
Every era on this page felt like the hinge of history. The feeling is the constant — not the proof.
