A tube of Dutch glass points up, and the sky acquires moons.
The road in
A Dutch spectacle-maker's toy reached Italy in 1609; Galileo rebuilt it, turned it upward, and published what he saw before anyone could look away.
The instrument itself was trade goods: spectacle-makers' glass, a Dutch patent squabble, toys sold in fairs — until Galileo rebuilt one, ground better lenses, and pointed it up. Within months he had seen more new things in the sky than the previous thousand years had recorded, and he published fast, in plain wonder.
Life inside it
Mountains on the Moon, moons about Jupiter, phases of Venus, stars beyond counting — each observation a brick out of the old cosmos. The instrument travelled, and the checking travelled with it.
Every observation subtracted a certainty: mountains on the Moon un-perfected the heavens, Jupiter's moons orbited something other than Earth, Venus showed phases only a Sun-centred sky could easily explain. The argument was no longer between books; it was between books and anyone's evening.
The road out
Rome tried Galileo in 1633 and won the case while losing the argument. Within a lifetime Newton unified the heavens Galileo had broken open — and seeing for yourself became the quiet motto of science.
Rome won the trial and lost the century: Galileo recanted kneeling and the heliocentric argument went on standing, checkable by any grandee with a lens. Within a lifetime Newton had bound the new sky into law. What survived of 1610 was less a fact than a habit — see for yourself, then say so in print — and it has never since been rescinded.

Dinner was worse and better than I feared. My father said the new lights were a trick of the glass, so I fetched the tube to the window and aimed it at the roof-tiles of the customs house, and he read the tally-marks painted there and was silent a long time. A trick that reads tally-marks at half a mile, he said at last, is a strange sort of trick. He has not looked at the sky through it. He polishes the case when he thinks I am out.
The master says the marvel is not the seeing but the checking: the Dutchman's toy shows one man a wonder, but the pamphlet tells a thousand men where to point their own. Already letters come from Prague, from Aix, from an Englishman with better lenses, all reporting the same servants of Jupiter on the same nights. The sky has become a public ledger, he says, and heaven help the accountant who kept the old books.

The scandal wasn't the data but the method: anyone with the instrument could check for themselves. Authority had competition.
The big idea: evidence over eminence. The consequence: the slow, painful deal between power and proof that we call modern science.
Wootton's larger claim frames the era: between Columbus and Newton, Europeans invented not just instruments but the machinery of discovery itself — priority, publication, replication, the expectation that knowledge grows. The telescope was the recruiting poster; the method was the revolution.

Where accounts differ
The credible challenge. Galileo's conflict is not a clean duel between science and religion: observation, scriptural interpretation, patronage, personality and institutional authority all shaped the case.
Taking it together. The telescope changed the evidence available, but evidence entered a world of courts and churches rather than deciding its own reception. Method and authority were renegotiated together.
The Church took 359 years to pardon Galileo. Institutions have learned to bend faster — mostly.
