The cost of solar photovoltaic modules fell dramatically over decades while factories grew, supply chains specialised and manufacturers learned to waste less material. This is often described by an experience curve: historically, each doubling of cumulative production has been associated with a fairly regular percentage decline in unit cost. Deployment and improvement reinforced one another.

That pattern is historical, not a law guaranteeing the next decline. Module prices are only part of a solar project; finance, grids, land, labour and permitting can dominate. Supply chains also carry environmental and labour risks. A plausible future has abundant cheap modules but uneven cheap electricity, depending on whether institutions build the connections and storage around them.

A methane plume can now become a public image

Methane absorbs infrared light at particular wavelengths. Instruments in orbit can detect that spectral signature and, under suitable cloud, surface and plume conditions, estimate unusually large releases from oil and gas facilities, mines or waste sites. What once depended mainly on inventories can sometimes be observed from above and linked to a location.

Not every leak is visible: detection thresholds, wind, cloud and revisit timing leave gaps, while estimates carry uncertainty. A satellite does not repair a valve or settle responsibility. One possible future is faster enforcement because repeated observations make large events harder to ignore. Another is a flood of alerts without local capacity to investigate. Measurement changes the politics only when institutions act.

Some AI may move closer to the device

A language model need not be the largest available to be useful. Compression, quantisation and task-specific tuning can reduce memory and computation enough for some models to run on phones, laptops or local servers. That can lower network delay and keep selected data on the device, while a larger remote model handles harder requests.

Small does not automatically mean private, efficient, accurate or safe. The surrounding app may still transmit data; hardware manufacturing and repeated use consume resources; benchmark gains may not survive a particular task. A plausible future is a layered system that routes work between local and remote models. Its benefits would depend less on the label “on-device” than on disclosed data flows, measured quality and user control.

A heat pump moves more heat than it makes

A heat pump circulates refrigerant through evaporation, compression, condensation and expansion. That cycle collects heat from outside air, ground or water and releases it indoors. Because electricity drives the transfer rather than supplying all the heat directly, a well-installed system can deliver several units of heat for each unit of electricity over suitable conditions.

Performance falls as the temperature lift grows and varies with climate, building fabric, emitters, controls and installation. Up-front cost and grid carbon also matter. A future with more heat pumps is therefore not simply an appliance swap: insulation, skilled installers, tariffs and network planning shape outcomes. The technology’s physical leverage is real; the realised saving is a property of the whole home and system.

An electricity grid must balance every moment

Electricity supply and demand must remain closely balanced. As weather-dependent generation grows, the valuable question is sometimes not how much energy an appliance uses but when. A water heater, vehicle charger or industrial process may shift consumption away from a tight hour while still delivering the same service. Aggregated, those changes can reduce peaks and curtailment.

Flexibility is not permission to make households absorb every system failure. Some loads cannot move; automation can exclude people without smart equipment, and tariffs can punish those with little control over timing. One possible grid uses consent-based automation and strong consumer protections to make invisible adjustments. Whether that future is fair depends on who receives the saving and who carries inconvenience.

Desalination pushes water through a selective barrier

In seawater reverse osmosis, pumps apply enough pressure to push water through membranes that reject most dissolved salts. Energy-recovery devices capture part of the pressure left in the concentrated stream, helping modern plants use far less electricity than older thermal methods. Pretreatment protects the membranes; later steps make the product water suitable for a network.

The result is drought-resistant supply, not consequence-free water. Intake systems, electricity sources, coastal habitat and concentrated brine require careful design, while high capital cost can deepen unequal access. In one future, desalination is a limited part of conservation, reuse and watershed care. In a worse one, it postpones demand reform. The same membrane can sit inside either policy.

An AI exposure estimate is not a jobs forecast

Studies of artificial-intelligence “exposure” often map system capabilities to tasks listed inside occupations. A high score may mean many tasks could change. It does not say whether firms will adopt the tool, whether law permits it, whether customers accept it, or whether saved time becomes fewer workers, more output or different duties.

Headlines frequently turn that conditional map into a countdown to job loss. The correction cuts both ways: exposure is not proof of unemployment, but neither is it proof that workers benefit. A plausible future includes jobs redesigned around new tools; another concentrates bargaining power and removes entry-level tasks. Institutions, prices and workplace choices decide between them, so dated scenario ranges are more honest than a single number.

A population projection is a conditional path

Many people alive in the next few decades are already born, which gives near-term population projections unusual inertia. Farther out, small differences in fertility accumulate, while mortality, migration and policy alter national paths. The United Nations therefore publishes variants and uncertainty intervals, not a revealed headcount for the end of the century.

Calling one medium projection “the population in 2100” erases those conditions. It also hides regional divergence: populations may age or decline in some places while growing in others. Scenarios are still useful for schools, pensions and infrastructure when their assumptions stay attached. The honest sentence begins “if”—if fertility follows this course, if survival changes so, if migration is treated this way.

The seed vault is a backup, not a rescue ship

Inside a mountain on Spitsbergen, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault holds sealed seed samples deposited by genebanks around the world. The depositor retains ownership and access. Its purpose resembles an offline backup: when a working collection loses material through war, equipment failure, disaster or ordinary regeneration problems, duplicates can help restore it.

The vault cannot preserve every crop, wild relative or plant that does not store well as seed. Nor can frozen packets conserve farmers’ evolving knowledge or replace living fields and local genebanks. A resilient food future needs the famous door and the less visible network behind it. Svalbard protects copies; people, funding and active collections keep diversity usable.

A carbon-removal machine is also an accounting problem

Direct air capture uses chemicals that bind carbon dioxide from ambient air, then heat or pressure to release a concentrated stream. The sorbent can be reused; the captured carbon may be stored underground or used in products. Early commercial plants turned a laboratory pathway into pipes, fans and contracts, despite air’s dilute carbon concentration.

A tonne captured at the machine is not automatically a tonne durably removed. Energy emissions, construction, transport, storage permanence and what happens to carbon in a product belong in the ledger. One scenario scales verified geological storage for residual emissions; another sells short-lived use as permanent cleanup. The hardware cannot choose between them. Standards and transparent life-cycle accounting must.

Keep a forecast with its date

Choose one measurable question due within three months: a policy decision, product milestone or monthly indicator. Write the exact outcome, deadline, probability and evidence that would change your mind. On the due date, score the event and add one sentence about the miss or hit. Keep the original wording visible.

A handful of entries will not prove that you are calibrated, and outcomes are not always independent or cleanly resolved. The exercise is observational, not an investing system. Its value is protection against hindsight: confidence about a possible future remains attached to a timestamp. Over time, repeated questions can reveal whether “likely” means anything stable in your own language—and whether updates happen when evidence arrives.

Walk the same street in sun and shade

On a hot, safe day, walk one familiar route twice at similar times: once along the sunnier side, once through available shade. Note surface material, tree canopy, waiting places, drinking water and where heat from traffic or buildings gathers. If you use a thermometer, treat it as one instrument reading, not a measure of personal heat risk.

The route cannot establish a city-wide heat-island trend, and conditions change with wind, humidity, season and sensor placement. Do not undertake it during dangerous heat. As observation, it asks a future-facing question: if hotter days become more common locally, who can reach shade and who must wait in exposure? Adaptation begins with climate projections, but its fairness can be inspected block by block.
